Oh.. the dorkiness continues...

Journal Entry: Tue Nov 24, 2009, 3:00 PM

I've become hopelessly addicted to Second Life, the virtual world by Linden Labs. For those of you not familiar with it, its a massively online "game" but there's no real game. You create an avatar and live a second life (hence the name). There are regions known as sims. These sims are mostly user owned and created. The company owns 3 major parcels of land and you can rent space on those from them, otherwise, people purchase or rent sims and build houses, clubs, museums, stores, amusement parks.. the list is endless. The really neat thing about SL is that it has a virtual economy.. yes.. a virtual economy. You can (but certainly don't have to) purchase currency called Lindens. These trade at different values depending upon the trade volume on any given day in your sovereign currency. The game costs nothing to purchase or play (the download is free) but you can get a premium membership which allows you to own land and gives you a L$300 a week stipend to spend as you wish. Otherwise, you can download it and play to your heart's content for nary a dime.

You can also earn Lindens by getting a job or creating objects for resale. The leading entrepenuer in SL a few years back made over 1 million US. Yes.. that's 1mil US. See the neat thing about this economy is that you can link it to paypal or credit card and cash out the lindens. While the RL economy has tanked and taken the SL economy with it, the potential is there to make some neat dough. I've always thought that skilled photographers could upload pics and sell them via a store in SL and make some money as people want to decorate their houses, clubs, etc...

Of course, just like RL, one of the largest areas of the SL economy is sex....... go figure. Sex clubs, BDSM clubs, and strip clubs are quite popular (I for one, work for a ladies only club...lol... its a hoot).

There's also sims dedicated to combat and role playing games. If you can think of it, odds are there's a sim for it. While the engines are nowhere near as good as a gaming console, there's an endless variety of gaming sims to play... pretty cool.

The best things about SL, as far as I'm concerned, are the friendships and comraderie. I've met some very, VERY good people in SL from all over the world.

If anyone out there plays (or gets into it) look me up as a friend. My avatar name is Connor Wrydan. I'll be the only Connor Wrydan in SL as accounts are driven by first and last names and only one person can have a name...

Oh well, back to being a virtual dork.. ;)

Lazy Ass Ol' Me

Journal Entry: Wed May 13, 2009, 11:48 AM

Well... my last journal discussed how I've had no motivation of late. I think that was incorrect. I have now come to believe that I'm just a lazy ass piece of :poo:

I go to my cruddy job, come home, watch my house fall apart around me and... can't bring myself to care. On the other hand... look how cool all of this new-fangled internet technology appears to be. I mean, I know its just a bunch of vacuum tubes and all (poke at US politics)... but boy you have everything from games to news and art to p0rn. How fun. Oh my, am I sitting in a pool of my own feces... oh well... can't get up now, there's more 'net to surf....

gods help us all...

Wasting time...

Wed Apr 22, 2009, 11:12 AM
Jesus, I have no motivation at all...still...

Well... I haven't picked up the camera in quite some time. Unfortunately, I'm feeling under-motivated in this area of my life since I'm pining for a telephoto zoom lens to shoot wildlife, but don't have the thousands of dollars necessary to obtain this piece of equipment. I've seen el-cheapo knock-offs on eBay for $99.00, but I the quality or compatibility of these items is highly suspect. I see all of the phenomenal wildlife captures other Deviants submit, and know that, even with practice, I cannot achieve results similar to theirs without one. My stock lens (came with the EOS Rebel XT) might carry me through some artistic nudes, but since none of my friends will model for me, and I cannot justify the costs involved in hiring a professional... oh well...Still, this is no excuse for slacking, I need to pick up the camera and make the best of what I have.
I'm also completely under-motivated in other areas of my life... I can't bring myself to fix up the yard for spring, can't motivate myself for much of anything really. I haven't even worked on stuff for my small part-time gaming business (on another DA account, :iconexplodinggoatgames:). We've been delayed in releasing our newest game book (miniature wargaming), Apocalypse-D... the gods know I need to finish formatting that book... time to fire up InDesign.
What I have been doing is dittering away my days playing online browser games through InstantAction ( [link] ). Fallen Empires is a fast-paced first person shooter with graphics to rival an X-Box 360... all in a free browser game. Fun but not really enriching my life one iota.
Oh... and there's Facebook Mafia Wars and YoVille. By the gods, am I wasting my time... it even is taking me forever to type this DAmn journal 'cause all the online gaming I'm doing is messing with my typing!!!! AARRRGGGHHHHH :frustrated:
Work's been quite busy lately and, me being a Union Vice President in negotiations during this crappy economy, the workload is extra and the stress through the roof... sigh...

Oh well... so much for venting.

Ho-hum

Jesus, I have no motivation at all...

Well... I don't really have much of a journal entry for you all. I know each of you that reads this is just hanging on my every word and cannot wait to hear what I'm up to... but, alas, I'm merely updating this so I don't have to look at the old journal entry. Its been up for over two months now and, well... it was just time for a change. Hopefully I'll have something incredibly interesting to say in the near future.

Slackers of the Caribbean

Fri Jan 9, 2009, 4:50 PM
Ahhhh... vacation. Cruising is the life.

Well tomorrow morning I'm flying to Tampa and then boarding the Carnival Legend. From there we set sail for the western Caribbean with ports of call in Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Belize, and Costa Maya. I simply cannot wait. I've never been to any of these places before and wish I could spend more than one day at each, but if that's my biggest problem, I'll stop whining now.

Cruising is, in my opinion, one of the best vacations. You basically get :star::star::star: or :star::star::star::star: accommodations, more food than you could possibly eat, entertainment, room service, and more for FAR less money than if you tried to get those individually. Some of the entertainment is on the cheesy side, but fun nonetheless. The alcohol is not included, but is the same price you'd pay if you went out to eat at your local cookie cutter sports bar/restaurant. The best part is that, since you're on a boat, there's no driving, imbibe as much as you'd like.

There's NO doubt that I'll be taking along the ol' camera. Between the local sites, tropical landscapes, and wildlife, I'm sure to fill both of my storage cards. If only I had those telephoto zoom lenses I want...

Well, I'll be sure to take some nice shots and, if any of them turn out worth a damn, I'll post 'em here.
